Spanish: There’s more to it than you think

Spanish around the world

Hola, ¿qué tal? Una cerveza, por favor. La cucaracha, la cucaracha, na na nana nana naaa…

If that’s the extent of your Spanish knowledge then you really should hang your head in shame.

Ok, pity party over! Let’s get down to the nitty gritty, why should you learn Spanish above all else?

Let the facts speak for themselves…

  • If you speak Spanish, you’ll be able to communicate with 500 MILLION people all over the world!
  • Spanish is an official language of the UN, the Southern Common Market, UNESCO and the European Union.
  • Can you name all the countries where Spanish is spoken? There are over 20 of them. Or better yet, which ones are on your bucket list?

Let’s look at the USA for example; did you know that one in every ten American citizens speaks Spanish at home? That’s a phenomenal amount! Even if that one American isn’t you, Spanish is everywhere. As a non-Spanish speaker, don’t you feel the pressure to compete with these bilingual people?

Jobs are few and far between these days, hands up if you’re sick of hearing about unemployment rates, and redundancies. Out of all that doom and gloom there is a glimmer of hope, the Hispanic market is currently undergoing the highest economic growth in the world. Global giants are growing out of these countries and expanding all over the globe despite the crisis, and Spanish is the second most common language used in international business communication throughout the world… Just think of all the opportunities out there. You may not even have to go that far to find yours.

Spanish-born Telefónica serves over 300 MILLION customers worldwide:

Telefónica is one of the world’s largest fully integrated telecommunication providers. We have presence in 44 countries, with full operations in 21 countries, commercial and operational offices with network infrastructure in China, the USA and 16 European countries, and Network Points of Presence in 5 more.

So, what if you’re happy in your job, and you learn for fun? Learning Spanish could become a keystone for your personal development.
The Spanish passion for life is addictive; once this rich language gets a hold on you, it’s hard to let it go
And it’s this rich culture which leaves its mark on the world: Picasso, Santiago Calatrava, Gaudí, Maradona, Shakira and writers such as Isabel Allende and Gabriel García Márquez whose books sell in their millions all over the world, are but a few examples.

And, heck, if that still doesn’t convince you, who doesn’t want to be able to serenade a special señorita in Spanish?
